I finally made a dollhouse!

Handcrafted Miniature 1/2 Scale Dollhouse

Last week I was looking at these beautiful intricate wooden puzzles for my teen boys  and I came across a miniature dollhouse kit. And I felt it. That instant spark of inspiration. I’ve always wanted to build a dollhouse, and I decided now’s the time. I’m gonna do it!

I dove head first into this dollhouse project and learning all the new things. Assembly, shingles, painting, scale, tiny furniture and decor… this is so my thing.

Feel free to follow as I work my way along the dollhouse-making journey.

Assembling the Dollhouse

The kit I bought came with brief instructions and wooden sheets of laser cut pieces. Figuring out how to put the house together wasn’t difficult at all but it did take patience.

I just took it one section at time, carefully removing the thin wooden pieces from the sheets and sanding as needed. Most of the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Other small detail pieces like window frames were glued on. I chose to glue these detail pieces on after painting. Which brings me to the next step in the process.

Painting the Dollhouse

Painting Handcrafted Miniature 1/2 Scale Dollhouse

For this little dollhouse I chose a light grey exterior paint, a dark grey for the roofing and classic white for the  trim and accents. I think it turned out so beautiful! I really took my time and was careful with the fine details. After I finished painting the exterior I moved to the interior which was more tricky.

I removed the stair cases and painted them separately. Then I put them back in place after painting the interior. Since I decided to paint after assembly I had to be extra careful painting the inside. There were some areas that seemed impossible to get to! But I found the tiniest paint brushes and got creative with angles. In the end it turned out nice, but in the future I will probably paint certain pieces before assembly. I love how it all came together!
